What is the difference between SCSS and Sass?

SCSS (Sassy CSS) and Sass are two syntaxes for the same preprocessor. SCSS uses curly braces and semicolons like regular CSS — any valid CSS is also valid SCSS. The indented Sass syntax uses indentation instead of braces and newlines instead of semicolons. SCSS is far more popular because it's familiar to CSS developers and easier to adopt incrementally. Most modern projects use the .scss file extension.
What are SCSS variables and why use them?

SCSS variables (declared with $) store reusable values like colors, font sizes, spacing, and breakpoints. For example, $primary-color: #3498db; lets you reference the same color throughout your stylesheet and change it in one place. While CSS custom properties (--variable) now offer similar functionality natively, SCSS variables are compile-time values that enable more powerful features like interpolation in selectors and math operations.
What is SCSS nesting and when should I use it?

SCSS nesting lets you write child selectors inside parent selectors, mirroring your HTML structure. For example, .nav { .item { color: blue; } } compiles to .nav .item { color: blue; }. Nesting improves readability for related styles, but over-nesting (more than 3-4 levels deep) creates overly specific selectors that are hard to override. The general rule: nest for structure, not for every parent-child relationship.
What is the difference between @mixin and @extend in SCSS?

@mixin creates reusable blocks of CSS that are copied wherever you @include them — like a function that outputs CSS. @extend shares a selector's styles by adding the extending selector to the original rule — it groups selectors rather than duplicating code. Use @mixin when you need parameters or when the styles vary between uses. Use @extend for simple style inheritance where you want minimal CSS output. Overusing @extend can create unexpected selector chains.
