What is the difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers?

Cardinal numbers express quantity — how many of something there are (one, two, three, one hundred). Ordinal numbers express position or rank — where something falls in a sequence (first, second, third, one hundredth). In writing, cardinals answer 'how many?' while ordinals answer 'which one in order?' This tool converts to both formats.
Why is there a difference between US and UK English number words?

The main difference is the word 'and.' In US English, you say 'one hundred twenty-three' — no 'and' between the hundreds and tens. In UK English, you say 'one hundred and twenty-three.' How do you write large numbers in words?

Each language has unique rules. French uses 'quatre-vingts' (four-twenties) for 80 and 'soixante-dix' (sixty-ten) for 70. Spanish combines teens into single words like 'veintiuno' (twenty-one) and uses 'ciento' before other numbers but 'cien' alone for exactly 100.
