What is RIPEMD-160 used for?

RIPEMD-160 is widely used in cryptocurrency systems, most notably in Bitcoin address generation where it is applied after SHA-256 to create shorter, more manageable addresses. It is also used in PGP key fingerprints and some legacy authentication protocols.
Is RIPEMD-160 still considered secure?

RIPEMD-160 provides 160-bit security and no practical collision attacks have been published against the full algorithm. However, for new applications, SHA-256 or SHA-3 are generally recommended. RIPEMD-160 remains secure for its existing use cases, particularly in Bitcoin.
How does RIPEMD-160 differ from MD5 and SHA-1?
