How many named colors exist in CSS3?
CSS3 defines exactly 140 named colors (also called extended colors or X11 colors). These range from basic colors like red, blue, and green to more specific shades like cornflowerblue, darkolivegreen, and papayawhip. Every modern browser recognizes all 140 names, making them a reliable way to specify colors in web development without remembering hex codes.
How does Euclidean distance work for color matching?
Euclidean distance in RGB space treats each color as a point in 3D space where the axes are Red, Green, and Blue values (0-255). The distance between two colors is calculated as the square root of the sum of squared differences for each channel. A distance of 0 means an exact match, while the maximum possible distance (between black #000000 and white #FFFFFF) is about 441. This provides a simple and fast approximation of color similarity.
Why might the nearest named color look different from my input?
CSS3 only has 140 named colors out of over 16 million possible hex colors, so exact matches are rare. The nearest named color is the closest available option, but the gap can be significant for unusual shades. The similarity percentage helps you gauge how close the match actually is — anything above 95% is visually very close, while matches below 80% may look noticeably different.
What is the difference between RGB distance and perceptual color difference?
RGB Euclidean distance treats all color channels equally, but human vision is more sensitive to some color differences than others. Perceptual color difference formulas like CIEDE2000 (deltaE) account for how humans actually perceive color, weighting green sensitivity higher and accounting for hue shifts. RGB distance is faster to calculate and sufficient for most use cases, while deltaE is more accurate for professional color work.
