DNS Zone File Generator

DNS Zone File Generator

The DNS Zone File Generator creates properly formatted BIND-compatible zone files for your domains. Instead of manually writing zone files with strict RFC 1035 syntax, this tool provides a visual interface to configure SOA records, add DNS records of any type, and generate a complete zone file ready for deployment.

Nutzung

Start by entering your domain name, primary nameserver, and admin email in dot notation. Configure the SOA timing parameters (refresh, retry, expire, minimum TTL) or keep the sensible defaults. Then use the record builder to add DNS records — select the record type, enter the name and value, and click Add. Supported types include A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SRV, and CAA. When ready, click Generate Zone File to produce the complete BIND-format output. Copy it to your clipboard or download as a .zone file.

Funktionen

  • SOA Record Builder – Configure primary nameserver, admin email, serial number (auto-generated in YYYYMMDDNN format), refresh, retry, expire, and minimum TTL values
  • Visual Record Builder – Add A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SRV, and CAA records through an intuitive form with type-specific fields
  • TTL Shorthand – Enter TTL values using shorthand notation like 1h, 1d, or 1w instead of raw seconds
  • BIND Format Output – Generates standard BIND-compatible zone files with proper formatting, trailing dots, and quoted TXT records
  • Kopieren und Herunterladen – Copy the generated zone file to your clipboard or download it as a .zone file

Häufig gestellte Fragen

  1. What is a DNS zone file?

A DNS zone file is a plain text file that contains mappings between domain names and IP addresses, along with other DNS resource records. It follows the BIND format defined in RFC 1035 and is used by DNS servers to resolve domain names to their corresponding network addresses.

  2. What is the SOA record in a zone file?

The SOA (Start of Authority) record is a mandatory record at the beginning of every zone file. It specifies the primary nameserver for the zone, the email address of the zone administrator, a serial number for version tracking, and timing parameters that control how secondary nameservers synchronize with the primary.

  3. How does the serial number format work in DNS zone files?

The serial number in the YYYYMMDDNN format uses the current date followed by a two-digit revision number. For example, 2026041401 represents the first revision on April 14, 2026. Secondary DNS servers compare serial numbers to determine if they need to request a zone transfer, so the serial must be incremented with every zone file change.

  4. What is the difference between TTL and minimum TTL in a zone file?

The default TTL ($TTL directive) sets the time-to-live for all records that do not specify their own TTL value. The minimum TTL in the SOA record (also called the negative caching TTL) controls how long DNS resolvers should cache negative responses, such as NXDOMAIN answers for non-existent domain names.
