What does a SWIFT/BIC code identify?

A SWIFT/BIC code is a standardized identifier defined by ISO 9362 that uniquely identifies a financial institution and, optionally, a specific branch. It is used to route international wire transfers and other interbank messages.
What is the difference between an 8 and 11 character code?

An 8 character code identifies the institution's primary (head office) location. An 11 character code appends a 3 character branch identifier that points to a specific office. The branch code 'XXX' is reserved for the head office when used in the 11 character form.
Why is the second character of the location code significant?

In ISO 9362, the second character of the location code conveys connection status. A digit of '0' indicates a test or non-live entry, '1' marks a passive participant, '2' indicates reverse billing, and any letter marks a normal live connection. This lets routing systems flag codes that should not be used for production transfers.
How is a BIC different from an IBAN?

A BIC identifies an institution; an IBAN identifies a specific account. International transfers historically required both — the BIC to route the message and the IBAN to credit the destination account. Many regions now derive routing from the IBAN alone, but the BIC remains required for many cross-border transactions.
Does this validator confirm an institution actually exists?

No. The validator confirms only that the code matches the ISO 9362 structural rules. Confirming that a given code is currently issued to an active institution requires an authoritative directory, which is licensed and not embedded in this tool.
