What are Unicode superscript and subscript characters?

Unicode superscript and subscript characters are special code points in the Unicode standard that render as smaller, raised (superscript) or lowered (subscript) versions of normal letters and numbers. They were originally intended for mathematical and phonetic notation but are widely used for decorative text formatting across the web.
Why do some characters not convert to subscript?

The Unicode standard only defines subscript variants for a limited set of letters (a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v, x) and digits 0-9. Letters like b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y, and z have no official Unicode subscript equivalent, so they remain unchanged in the output.
