How are phone number formats structured differently across countries?

Phone number formats vary significantly by country. The US and Canada use a fixed 10-digit format (3-digit area code + 7 digits). The UK uses variable-length numbers (London numbers start with 020, mobiles with 07). Germany has variable-length area codes (Berlin is 030, Munich is 089). Japan uses 10-11 digits with different prefixes for mobile (090/080/070) and landline (city codes like 03 for Tokyo). These structural differences are critical for proper phone number validation in software.
What is the E.164 international phone number standard?

E.164 is the ITU-T standard for international telephone numbering. It specifies that a phone number can have a maximum of 15 digits, starting with a country code (1-3 digits) followed by the subscriber number. The format is +[country code][number] with no spaces or formatting characters. For example, a US number becomes +12125551234 and a UK mobile becomes +447911123456. E.164 is widely used in telecommunications APIs and databases as the canonical phone number format.
Why use generated phone numbers instead of real ones for testing?

Using real phone numbers in test environments risks accidentally calling or texting real people, violating telecom regulations, and exposing personal data. For US testing specifically, the 555 area code range (555-0100 to 555-0199) is officially reserved for fictional use by NANPA.
