What is E.164 format and why does it matter?

E.164 is the international telephone numbering standard defined by the ITU. It specifies a maximum of 15 digits starting with a country code prefix (e.g., +14155552671). It matters because it is the universal format used by telecommunications carriers, VoIP services, and APIs like Twilio and AWS SNS to route calls and messages globally.
How do country calling codes work?

Country calling codes are 1-3 digit prefixes assigned by the ITU to each country or territory. For example, +1 covers the US and Canada (the North American Numbering Plan), +44 is the United Kingdom, and +91 is India. When dialing internationally, you use the exit code followed by the country code and the subscriber number.
What is the difference between mobile and fixed-line phone numbers?

Mobile numbers are assigned to wireless cellular devices and can move with the subscriber (number portability). Fixed-line numbers are tied to a physical location and connected via landline infrastructure.
