GPA Formula

GPA is calculated as a weighted average: GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) / Σ(credit hours). Each letter grade maps to a point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.), multiplied by the course’s credit hours. The sum of all grade points divided by total credit hours gives your GPA.

Preguntas frecuentes

  1. How is GPA calculated?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is a weighted average of your grades. Each course grade is converted to grade points (on a 4.0 scale: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0), then multiplied by the course's credit hours. Add up all the grade points and divide by total credit hours. For example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course gives (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) / (3+4) = 24/7 = 3.43 GPA.

  2. What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA covers only the courses taken in a single term. Cumulative GPA includes all courses across all semesters of your academic career. Your cumulative GPA is recalculated each semester by combining the new semester's grade points and credits with your existing totals. A strong semester can raise a low cumulative GPA, but the more credits you've completed, the smaller the impact of any single semester.

  3. What GPA do I need for honors or dean's list?

Requirements vary by institution, but common thresholds are: Dean's List typically requires a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher. Cum Laude (honors) graduation usually requires a cumulative GPA of 3.5+, Magna Cum Laude 3.7+, and Summa Cum Laude 3.9+. Graduate school admissions generally expect a minimum 3.0 GPA, with competitive programs preferring 3.5 or above. Always check your specific institution's requirements.

  4. How does the percentage to GPA conversion work?

When using the percentage scale, grades are converted to the 4.0 scale using standard ranges: 90-100% = 4.0 (A), 80-89% = 3.0 (B), 70-79% = 2.0 (C), 60-69% = 1.0 (D), below 60% = 0.0 (F). Some institutions use more granular conversions with +/- grades. This calculator uses the standard conversion, but you can also manually select letter grades on the 4.0 scale for more precise results.
