CAGR Calculator
The CAGR Calculator finds the compound annual growth rate of an investment, business metric, or any value that grows over time. Enter a starting value, an ending value, and the number of years, and the tool computes the smooth annual rate that would carry the start to the end if it grew at a steady pace each year. A reverse mode lets you project a future value from a starting amount and a target CAGR.
Nutzung
- Pick a mode: Calculate CAGR from a start and end value, or Project Future Value from a start value and an annual rate.
- Enter the starting value (for example, an initial investment or a baseline metric).
- Enter the ending value or the CAGR percent, depending on the mode.
- Enter the number of years over which the change happened (or will happen).
- Read the headline result, the total return, and the year-by-year growth table to see how the value compounds.
Funktionen
- Two-way calculation – Solve for CAGR from totals, or project future value from a target rate.
- Year-by-year breakdown – See starting balance, growth, and ending balance for every year.
- Visual line chart – Watch the compounding curve grow across the time horizon.
- Total return summary – Absolute gain plus cumulative percent return at a glance.
- Live updates – Numbers and chart recalculate the moment you change an input.
- Negative-return support – Handles declines as well as growth, with a visual cue when the result is a loss.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
-
What is CAGR and how is it calculated?
CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) is the smooth, constant annual rate at which an initial value would grow to reach a final value over a given number of years. The formula is CAGR = (End / Start)^(1/years) - 1. It assumes profits are continuously reinvested, so each year's growth compounds on top of the previous year.
-
How does CAGR differ from simple average growth or arithmetic mean?
A simple average treats each year independently and adds them, which overstates real growth when results swing year to year. CAGR is a geometric average: it weights compounding so that volatile years cancel out and you get the single equivalent rate that produces the actual end value. Two series with the same arithmetic mean can have very different CAGRs.
-
What are CAGR's main limitations?
CAGR hides volatility — it shows only the smoothed end-to-end rate, not how bumpy the journey was. It also ignores cash flows added or withdrawn during the period (for those, use IRR or MWRR), and it can be misleading over very short horizons. Use it for trend comparison, not for risk analysis.
-
When should I use CAGR instead of total return?
Use total return when you want to know the cumulative percent change over the whole period. Use CAGR when comparing investments or metrics with different time horizons — annualizing puts a 3-year and a 10-year result on the same yardstick. CAGR is also the natural input for forward projections at a steady rate.
