FAQ

  1. Why do checks and legal documents require numbers written in words?

Writing numbers in words on checks and legal documents prevents fraud and ambiguity. Numeric figures can be easily altered (changing 1 to 7, for example), but written words are much harder to modify without detection. Most legal systems consider the written word form as the authoritative amount if there is a discrepancy.

  2. How does number naming differ between short scale and long scale systems?

The short scale system (used in the US, UK, and most English-speaking countries) assigns new names every three decimal places — million, billion, trillion. The long scale (used in much of continental Europe) assigns new names every six places, so a billion in the long scale equals a trillion in the short scale. French and German use the long scale, which is why their large number words differ from English.

  3. What are ordinal numbers and when should they be used?

Ordinal numbers indicate position or rank in a sequence — first, second, third, rather than one, two, three. They are used for dates (March 5th), rankings (1st place), floor levels (3rd floor), and sequential items (the fourth chapter). Different languages form ordinals with different suffix rules, which is why automated conversion is useful for multilingual content.
