Safelink Decoder
Guide
Safelink Decoder
Microsoft SafeLinks wraps URLs with a long, obfuscated protection layer before they reach your inbox. While this is a security measure, it often makes the original link unreadable. The Safelink Decoder instantly extracts the original destination URL from any Microsoft SafeLink, so you can see exactly where a link points before clicking.
How to Use
Paste one or more Microsoft SafeLink URLs into the input field (one per line). The tool automatically decodes each URL and displays the original destination in the output field. You can toggle “Show only extracted URLs” to hide the “(not a SafeLink)” annotation for non-SafeLink URLs. Use the copy or download buttons to save the decoded results.
Features
- Instant Decoding – Automatically processes SafeLink URLs as you type with no button click required.
- Batch Processing – Decode multiple SafeLink URLs at once by pasting one per line.
- Non-SafeLink Detection – Clearly labels URLs that are not Microsoft SafeLinks so you know which ones were already clean.
- Copy and Download – Quickly copy decoded URLs to clipboard or download them as a text file.
FAQ
-
What are Microsoft SafeLinks?
Microsoft SafeLinks are a security feature in Microsoft Defender for Office 365 that rewrites URLs in emails and documents. When enabled, all links are routed through Microsoft's servers for real-time scanning before redirecting to the original destination, helping protect users from phishing and malicious websites.
-
Why do SafeLinks make URLs so long and unreadable?
SafeLinks encode the original URL as a query parameter inside a Microsoft protection domain (safelinks.protection.outlook.com). The resulting URL includes the encoded destination, tracking metadata, and authentication tokens, which makes it significantly longer and harder to read than the original link.
-
Is it safe to decode and visit a SafeLink URL directly?
Decoding a SafeLink only reveals the original destination URL — it does not bypass any security scanning that has already occurred. However, you should still exercise caution with any URL. If Microsoft flagged the link as suspicious, visiting the decoded URL directly means you skip the real-time protection layer that SafeLinks provides.
