ISBN Validator & Checksum Checker

Validador de ISBN y Verificador de Suma de Comprobación

Validate ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 numbers instantly with precise checksum verification. This tool checks whether an ISBN is mathematically valid, converts between ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 formats, auto-formats with proper hyphenation, and identifies registration groups. Perfect for publishers, librarians, booksellers, and developers working with book metadata.

Cómo utilizar

Enter a single ISBN (10 or 13 digits) in the input field to instantly validate it. The tool automatically strips spaces and dashes, so you can paste ISBNs in any format. For bulk checking, switch to Batch Validation and paste multiple ISBNs — one per line — to validate them all at once. Results show the validation status, ISBN type, formatted number with hyphens, check digit, registration group, and a step-by-step checksum breakdown.

Características

  • ISBN-10 Validation – Verifies the modulus-11 checksum, including support for the X check digit
  • ISBN-13 Validation – Verifies the EAN-13 alternating-weight modulus-10 checksum
  • Conversión bidireccional – Converts ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 and vice versa automatically
  • Auto-Hyphenation – Inserts hyphens according to ISBN registration group rules
  • Validación por Lotes – Validate multiple ISBNs at once with a clear results table
  • Registration Group Lookup – Identifies the language or country group from the ISBN prefix
  • Step-by-Step Checksum – Shows the full checksum calculation so you can verify the math

Preguntas frecuentes

  1. What is the difference between ISBN-10 and ISBN-13?

ISBN-10 was the original standard used before 2007 and uses a modulus-11 checksum with digits 0-9 plus X (representing 10). ISBN-13 was introduced to expand capacity and aligns with the EAN-13 barcode system, using a modulus-10 checksum with alternating weights of 1 and 3. All new ISBNs issued today are ISBN-13.

  2. How does the ISBN-10 checksum algorithm work?

Each of the 10 digits is multiplied by a descending weight from 10 to 1. The products are summed and the result must be divisible by 11 (sum mod 11 = 0). If the check digit needs to be 10, the letter X is used instead.

  3. Can every ISBN-13 be converted to ISBN-10?

No. Only ISBN-13 numbers that start with the 978 prefix (known as Bookland) can be converted to ISBN-10. ISBNs beginning with 979 have no ISBN-10 equivalent because the 979 prefix was introduced after ISBN-10 was phased out.

  4. What do the different parts of an ISBN represent?

An ISBN-13 consists of a GS1 prefix (978 or 979), a registration group element (language or country), a registrant element (publisher), a publication element (specific edition), and a check digit. Together these segments uniquely identify every published book edition worldwide.
