What is Zalgo text?
Zalgo text is the corrupted, dripping, seizing-out-of-its-line text you've seen in horror memes and cursed screenshots. It isn't an image and it isn't a font. It's ordinary characters with dozens of Unicode combining diacritical marks stacked on top of them.
A combining mark is a character with no width of its own — it renders attached to whatever precedes it. Pile up forty of them and the glyph smears far above and below its line, bleeding into neighbouring rows of text. The name comes from a 2004 internet horror meme.
How to use it
Type or paste your text, turn the chaos level up for more marks per character, and toggle whether the corruption grows above, through or below the line, then press Corrupt.
- Damage top stacks marks like accents and rings above the character.
- Damage middle overlays strikethroughs, slashes and tildes across it.
- Damage bottom hangs marks beneath the baseline.
Skip spaces leaves the gaps between words clean, which keeps the text a little more legible.
Every press of Corrupt produces a different result, even with nothing changed — the marks are chosen randomly, so press it again anytime for a fresh look at the same text.
Where it works, and where it breaks
Zalgo text is real Unicode, so it copies and pastes anywhere: Discord, chat apps, documents, most social networks. A few things to know:
Some platforms strip or clamp combining marks — Twitter/X limits how many will render, and many mobile keyboards silently drop them. Zalgo text is also genuinely hostile to screen readers, which will attempt to announce every mark, so don't use it where someone might rely on assistive technology to read your message. And because each mark is its own character, a short Zalgo string can consume a surprising number of characters against a length limit.
Does it damage anything?
No. The underlying letters are untouched — strip the combining marks and your original text comes back exactly. Nothing here modifies your device or the site you paste into.
