Guides

The Astronomical Unit Converter turns one space distance into nine units at once: astronomical units (AU), kilometers, miles, light-seconds, light-minutes, light-hours, light-days, light-years and parsecs. It also shows how long light takes to travel that distance.

An astronomical unit is the average Earth–Sun distance, fixed by the IAU at exactly 149,597,870,700 meters. It is the natural yardstick inside the solar system, while light-years and parsecs take over between stars.

How to use it

  1. Enter a distance and choose its unit.
  2. Pick how many decimals to show.
  3. Read the table, and copy or download it as CSV.

Handy references

  • Earth to Sun: 1 AU, about 8 minutes 19 seconds of light time
  • Sun to Neptune: about 30 AU
  • 1 light-year: about 63,241 AU
  • 1 parsec: about 206,265 AU, or 3.26 light-years

Everything runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.
