Guides

Upload a PDF and ask it questions in plain English — get AI answers grounded in the document's own text, in a running conversation. No signing up for a separate PDF subscription: it's free to try and priced per question in credits, like every other AI tool here.

How does it work?

  1. Upload a PDF. Its text is extracted on our server (no AI involved yet, so this step is free).
  2. Type a question in the chat box and send it. The model reads the extracted text — and the questions and answers you've already exchanged — and answers grounded in what the document actually says.
  3. Keep asking follow-up questions. Each answer is aware of the conversation so far, so "what page was that on?" or "explain that more" work the way a real conversation would.

What kinds of documents work best?

Anything with real, selectable text — reports, articles, contracts, manuals, ebooks. A scanned or photographed PDF with no embedded text layer has nothing to extract, so there's nothing to chat about; run it through Scanned PDF Converter first to add a text layer, then upload the result here.

Does it make things up?

The model is instructed to answer only from what the document says, and to say so plainly when the answer isn't in it rather than guessing. Like any AI tool, treat its answers as a starting point for a document you'd otherwise have to skim yourself — verify anything you're relying on against the source.

Is my document sent anywhere?

The extracted text (and your questions) are sent to our AI provider chain to generate each answer — that's how the tool works. The original PDF file itself isn't stored; only the current conversation lives in your browser tab and is gone when you close it or reload the page.

What if I want a summary instead of a conversation?

Use PDF Summarizer for a single AI-generated summary in one click, or Question Generator to turn a PDF into a multiple-choice quiz — both skip the back-and-forth if that's all you need.
