Cross-Stitch Size Calculator

API reference

Work out the finished size of a cross-stitch design from its stitch count and your fabric count, then add margins to get the fabric size to cut. Compares every common Aida and evenweave count.

Input

Aida is stitched over 1 block. Evenweave and linen are usually stitched over 2 threads, which halves the stitches per inch.

Extra fabric around the design for framing and handling. 2–3 inches per side is typical.

Guides

A cross-stitch chart tells you how many stitches wide and high a design is, but not how big it will be. The finished size depends on your fabric count, the number of fabric blocks (or threads) per inch. This calculator does the maths and tells you how much fabric to cut.

How to use it

  1. Enter the design's width and height in stitches (printed on the chart or pattern page).
  2. Choose your fabric count: 14-count Aida is the most common for beginners, 18 is finer, 11 is chunky.
  3. Choose whether you stitch over 1 (Aida) or over 2 threads (evenweave and linen).
  4. Set the margin per side to see how large a piece of fabric to cut.

The formula

design size = stitches ÷ stitches per inch

On Aida, stitches per inch equal the count. On evenweave or linen stitched over two threads, stitches per inch are half the count, so a 32-count linen gives 16 stitches per inch. A 120 × 150 stitch design on 14-count Aida is 8.57 × 10.71 inches.

Choosing a margin

Allow 2–3 inches on every side for framing, hoop mounting and a finished edge. The "fabric to cut" figure adds the margin on both sides of each dimension.

Compare counts

The table shows the same design on every common count, so you can see how switching from 14 to 18 count shrinks the piece, and export it as CSV.
