Cylinder Calculator
Solve a right circular cylinder's radius, height, or volume from the other two values, plus its base area, lateral (side) area, and total surface area — with a labeled diagram.
Input
Leave any ONE of radius, height, or volume blank — it's solved from the other two.
Output
The cylinder diagram will appear here once solved.

Guides
Solve a right circular cylinder's radius, height, or volume from the other two values, plus its base area, lateral (side) area, and total surface area — with a labeled diagram.
The formulas
For a cylinder with radius r and height h:
volume = π r² h
base area = π r²
lateral (side) area = 2π r h
total surface area = 2 × base area + lateral areaSolve for any of the three
Leave any ONE of radius, height, or volume blank and the calculator solves for it from the other two:
- Missing volume →
volume = π r² h - Missing height →
h = volume / (π r²) - Missing radius →
r = √(volume / (π h))
If all three are supplied, the calculator checks they're consistent and flags it if they aren't.
How to use it
- Enter any two of radius, height, and volume — the third is solved for you.
- Read the labeled diagram and the full solution (volume, base area, lateral area, total surface area), or copy the SVG source.
All calculations run in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
What if my three values don't match up?
If you fill in radius, height, and volume all at once, the calculator verifies volume = π r² h and tells you what volume that radius and height actually give if it doesn't — leave one field blank instead to have it solved for you.
Base area vs. lateral area vs. total surface area
The base area is the area of one circular end (π r²) — there are two of them. The lateral area is the curved side surface if you "unrolled" it flat (2π r h). The total surface area adds both ends' area to the lateral area: 2 × base area + lateral area.
