Guides
Encrypt or decrypt text with DES or Triple DES (3DES) entirely in your browser. Nothing you type — text, key or IV — is uploaded.
How to use it
- Paste your text (or the ciphertext, when decrypting) into Input.
- Pick Encrypt or Decrypt, the Algorithm and the Mode (ECB or CBC).
- Enter the Key as hex: 16 hex characters (8 bytes) for DES; 48 hex characters (24 bytes) for three-key Triple DES, or 32 (16 bytes) for two-key 3DES.
- In CBC mode, also enter an 8-byte IV (16 hex characters). ECB ignores it.
- Choose whether ciphertext is Base64 or Hex. Output appears in Result.
Plaintext is UTF-8 and padded with PKCS#7, so the output is compatible with OpenSSL (openssl enc -des-ecb, -des-ede3-cbc) and most libraries.
Should I still use DES?
No, not for new work. DES has a 56-bit effective key and can be brute-forced; NIST has deprecated Triple DES too. ECB mode also encrypts identical blocks to identical ciphertext, leaking structure. This tool exists for reading and producing data for legacy systems. For anything new use AES.
Troubleshooting
- "Decryption failed" — key, IV or mode is different from what was used to encrypt, or the ciphertext was altered.
- Ciphertext length must be a multiple of 8 bytes.
- Two-key 3DES (16-byte key) is expanded to K1‖K2‖K1, the standard definition.
