What the DNS Lookup tool does

Every domain name is backed by DNS records that tell the internet where its website lives, which servers handle its email, and how it proves ownership to third-party services. This tool queries those records live and shows you exactly what a public resolver returns for any domain — the record values plus a human-readable TTL (time-to-live) for each one.

It supports the record types you reach for most often:

  • A — the IPv4 address a hostname points to.
  • AAAA — the IPv6 address.
  • MX — the mail servers that accept email for the domain, with their priority.
  • NS — the authoritative name servers for the zone.
  • TXT — free-form text records used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC and domain verification.
  • CNAME — an alias pointing one hostname at another.
  • SOA — the start-of-authority record with the zone's primary name server and refresh timers.

How to use it

  1. Type a domain name such as example.com into the field. Any http:// prefix, path or port is stripped automatically, so pasting a full URL works too.
  2. Pick the record type you want to inspect.
  3. Click Look up DNS. The lookup runs on our server (browsers can't issue cross-origin DNS queries) and the results appear in seconds.

The Query panel summarises the domain, the record type and how many records were found — or the DNS status message if the domain doesn't exist. The Records table lists each record's type, name, value and TTL, and can be copied or downloaded as CSV.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I see a CNAME when I asked for an A record?

When a hostname is an alias, resolvers return the CNAME and the address records it ultimately points to. The Type column labels each row so the chain is clear.

What does the TTL mean?

TTL is how long a record may be cached before a resolver must fetch it again. A value like 5m 0s means five minutes. Lower TTLs propagate changes faster; higher TTLs reduce lookups.

Why is a record missing right after I changed it?

DNS changes take time to propagate as cached copies expire. If you just edited a record, wait for the old TTL to elapse and check again.

Which resolver does this use?

Queries go over DNS-over-HTTPS to Cloudflare's public resolver, with Google's public resolver as an automatic fallback if the first is unreachable.

Privacy

The domain you enter is sent to our server only to perform the DNS query, then to the public resolver. It is not stored, and no results are retained after the lookup returns.
