Guides

Your net worth is the single number that sums up your financial position: everything you own minus everything you owe. This calculator adds up your assets and liabilities by category, shows the total live as you type, and draws both sides on one scale so you can see the gap between them.

How to use it

  1. Fill in the Assets fields — cash and savings, investments and retirement accounts, real estate, vehicles, and anything else of value.
  2. Fill in the Liabilities fields — mortgage, car loans, student loans, credit-card balances, and other debts.
  3. Read the results: total assets, total liabilities, and your net worth (assets − liabilities), plus a category breakdown and a chart comparing the two sides.

Leave any field at 0 if it doesn't apply. The currency selector only changes the symbol — no exchange-rate conversion is applied, so enter every figure in the same currency.

What counts as an asset or a liability

Assets are what you own at today's value, not what you paid: the current market value of your home, the resale value of your car, the current balance of your brokerage and retirement accounts.

Liabilities are the amounts still outstanding, not the original loan. If you borrowed 300,000 for a house and have paid it down to 240,000, enter 240,000.

The most common mistake is entering a home at market value while entering the mortgage at its original size — that understates net worth, sometimes badly.

Reading the results

  • Net worth — the headline figure. A negative number simply means debts currently exceed assets; that's normal early in a career, particularly with student loans.
  • Liquid assets — cash plus investments, i.e. what you could realistically reach in a hurry. A large net worth made up almost entirely of home equity is not the same as a large net worth you can spend.
  • Debt-to-asset ratio — liabilities as a percentage of assets. Lower is safer; above 100% means you have negative net worth.
  • Category breakdown — each line item's share of its own side, which is where concentration shows up (for example, property being 85% of everything you own).

How often should I recalculate?

Once a quarter is plenty for most people. Net worth moves slowly, and tracking it monthly mostly measures market noise. What matters is the direction over a year, not the exact figure on any given day.

Should I include my pension or 401(k)?

Yes — include the current balance under investments and retirement. Money you can't access yet is still yours. A defined-benefit pension with no stated balance is harder to value; most people leave it out and treat it as future income instead.

Is my data saved anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to a server or stored. Closing the tab clears it.
