A numeronym is a word abbreviated using numbers. The most common form keeps the first and last letter of a word and replaces every letter in between with the count of those middle letters. That is how "internationalization" becomes i18n (18 letters between the i and the n), "kubernetes" becomes k8s, "accessibility" becomes a11y, and "localization" becomes l10n.
This tool turns any word — or a whole block of text — into its numeronym form instantly, right in your browser.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text into the Input Text box. It can be a single word or many words across multiple lines.
- Adjust Minimum word length if you like. Only words with at least this many letters are abbreviated; anything shorter is left untouched. The default is 4, so three-letter words such as "cat" stay as they are (abbreviating them to "c1t" would not save any characters).
- Read the result from the Numeronyms box, then copy or download it.
Whitespace, punctuation and line breaks are preserved exactly, so the structure of your text stays intact — only the words themselves change. The original capitalization of the first and last letter is kept, so "Kubernetes" becomes "K8s" rather than "k8s".
What is a numeronym good for?
- Technical shorthand. Terms like i18n (internationalization), l10n (localization), a11y (accessibility), k8s (kubernetes) and o11y (observability) are everywhere in software and DevOps. This tool generates them for any term you throw at it.
- Compact naming. Numeronyms make short, memorable identifiers for projects, channels, tags and handles.
- Fun and puzzles. Numeronyms show up in word games and as a playful way to abbreviate long words.
How is the number calculated?
It is simply the count of letters between the first and last letter — that is, the word length minus two. "Observability" has 13 letters, so 13 − 2 = 11 middle letters, giving o11y.
Why did my word not change?
Words shorter than the Minimum word length setting are left alone. A word also needs at least three letters to be abbreviated at all, because it has to keep a first letter, a last letter, and at least one letter in between to count. Numbers and punctuation are treated as separators and are never modified.
