Seismic Base Shear Estimator
Estimate earthquake base shear (V = Cs·W) with the ASCE 7 equivalent lateral force method from design spectral accelerations, response modification factor, importance factor, building height and seismic weight, with a storey-by-storey force distribution.
Input
From your code's seismic-force-resisting system table, e.g. 8 for special steel moment frames.
Dead load plus applicable partition, storage and snow loads, for the whole building.
Enter a period from analysis to override the approximate Ta = Ct·hn^x.
With 2 or more, W and hn are split evenly to give the force at each floor level.

Base shear is the total horizontal force an earthquake is assumed to impose on a building at its base. This estimator applies the equivalent lateral force (ELF) method from ASCE 7: it finds the building period, the seismic response coefficient Cs, multiplies by the seismic weight, and optionally spreads the shear over the floors.
The formulas
Ta = Ct × hn^x (approximate period)
Cs = SDS / (R / Ie)
Cs ≤ SD1 / (T × R/Ie) for T ≤ TL
Cs ≤ SD1 × TL / (T² × R/Ie) for T > TL
Cs ≥ max(0.044 × SDS × Ie, 0.01)
V = Cs × W
Fx = V × wx·hx^k / Σ(wi·hi^k) k = 1 for T ≤ 0.5 s, 2 for T ≥ 2.5 sWorked example: SDS 1.0, SD1 0.6, R 8, Ie 1, a 24 m steel moment frame weighing 20,000 kN. Ta ≈ 0.92 s, so Cs from SDS = 1.0 / 8 = 0.125 (the SD1 limit of 0.0815 is lower and governs), giving V ≈ 1,630 kN.
How to use it
- Enter SDS and SD1 from your site's design response spectrum.
- Enter R and pick the risk category for Ie.
- Enter the seismic weight and building height, and choose the structural system.
- Optionally override the period, TL, or enter a storey count for the force distribution.
FAQ
Is this a code check? No. It is a preliminary estimate. It ignores the S1 ≥ 0.6 g minimum, redundancy, torsion, drift and other requirements. Always verify with the governing code.
Where do SDS and SD1 come from? From the site's mapped spectral accelerations and soil class (the USGS seismic design maps for ASCE 7), or from your local code's equivalent.
How is the storey distribution computed? W and hn are divided evenly, so every floor has the same weight and height. Real buildings should use actual floor weights.
