A continent's name anchors a whole world. Before a reader meets a single character, the name on the map tells them whether they're in a place of ice and iron, sun-baked empires or drowned coasts. This generator produces continent names that sound like real geography — plausible, pronounceable, rooted in believable etymology — while keeping the air of mystery a good map needs. Each comes with a short note on the land's character, so the name arrives with a hint of the story it holds.

It's built for fantasy worldbuilders, game masters, mapmakers and writers who need a name for the landmass their whole setting stands on.

How to use it

Length shapes the feel of the place. Short names (Vahl, Oran, Keth) read as hard, ancient or singular — a lone continent with a blunt history. Longer names (Aurendale, Thessarian, Kaltavora) read as sprawling and storied, the kind of land with many kingdoms and a long chronicle.

Complexity decides how invented the linguistics feel. Simple stays close to familiar, easy-to-say roots; elaborate leans into richer, more exotic syllables that suggest an unfamiliar language behind the map.

Use extra context to match the geography and culture you have in mind:

  • "frozen northern continent, harsh and mountainous"
  • "tropical archipelago-turned-continent, seafaring peoples"
  • "arid empire, Latin- or Arabic-flavoured roots"
  • "verdant, mist-covered land with a Celtic feel"

Are these names geographically or linguistically accurate?

They're built to feel authentic rather than to translate anything real. The generator draws on the sound patterns and etymological cues that make place names convincing — repeated roots, plausible suffixes, consistent phonetics — but the meanings are evocative, not sourced from a real language. For a specific real-world flavour (Norse, Latin, Swahili), name it in the extra-context box and the results will lean that way.

How do I keep a whole map's names consistent?

Generate in themed batches. If your continent's people speak one language, ask for names "in a consistent linguistic style" via the context box, then reuse the same descriptor for its regions, rivers and cities. Consistency across a map comes from shared roots and sounds, so pick a couple you like and steer subsequent runs toward them.

Can I use a generated continent name in my published work?

Generally yes — short invented place names aren't protected by copyright, so a continent name here is yours to use. Do a quick search before you commit, since the model has read widely in fantasy fiction and can occasionally hand back a name close to a well-known setting's.

Why do some names sound similar within one batch?

Believable place names share phonetic DNA, so a single run naturally clusters around a few strong roots. Near-identical duplicates are filtered out before you see them, and pressing Generate again nudges the model toward fresh sounds.
