A country's name sets the tone for everything a reader imagines about it before they learn a single fact. Vothrania promises cold mountains and old grudges; Sunmeer promises warm coasts and easy trade. This generator builds names for fictional nations, lands and city-states — grounded in the sound of a real language or invented whole — and pairs each with a line on the geography, culture or history the name is reaching for.

It works for the sprawling empire on your campaign map, the small republic in your novel, and the alt-history nation you need to name in passing. Each name is meant to feel like it belongs to a people, not just a point on a map.

How to use it

The length control shifts the register. Short names (Kesh, Vaal, Orn) read as ancient, blunt, tribal — the kind carved into stone. Longer names (Aurelian Confederacy, Thessavonia) read as formal modern states with governments and borders.

Complexity decides how far the spelling drifts from English. Simple keeps names you can read aloud on the first try; elaborate introduces less familiar consonant clusters and vowel runs that signal an unfamiliar tongue.

Use extra context to anchor the culture, climate and politics:

  • "cold northern kingdom, Norse-flavoured, ruled by warring clans"
  • "desert trade republic, Arabic and Persian roots"
  • "island nation known for its navy and its storms"
  • "post-empire successor state, formal and slightly pompous"

Are these based on real countries?

No — every name is invented. The generator borrows the sound and naming logic of real languages so a name feels like it comes from a real place, but it isn't translating or copying any existing country. If you want a name rooted in a specific tradition, name that tradition in the context box and the phonetics will follow.

Can I use a generated country name in my published work?

Generally yes — short invented place names aren't protected by copyright, so a name here is yours to use in a novel, game or map. Two cautions: run a quick search first, since a plausible-sounding name occasionally collides with a real town or an existing fictional setting, and avoid names that lean too hard on a single well-known franchise's world.

How do I get names that sound like they belong together?

Ask for them in one batch with a shared culture in the context box — "five neighbouring kingdoms in one Slavic-flavoured region." Generating a region's nations together keeps their phonetics consistent, so the names read as a real map rather than a grab-bag.
