ガイド

Elf names live or die on their sound. Get it right and the name does half the characterisation for you; get it wrong and your ancient woodland archer is called Kevin. This generator leans on the conventions the genre has settled into — flowing vowels, soft consonants, meanings that gesture at light, shadow or season — and explains what each name is reaching for.

It covers the three subtypes most settings use: high elves (formal, melodic, faintly celestial), wood elves (earthier, shorter, tied to place and season) and dark elves (harder consonants, meanings that lean towards shadow and secrecy).

How to use it

The length control is doing more work than it looks. Short names (Lyr, Faen, Nel) read as wood-elf or as an everyday given name. Long ones (Aelrindel, Silaqui, Thaelamyr) read as high-elven and formal — the kind of name that comes with a title.

Complexity decides how far the spelling strays from what an English speaker can sound out. Elaborate will hand you apostrophes and doubled vowels; if your players have to spell it out loud every session, stay on balanced.

Use extra context for the specifics your setting needs:

  • "dark elf, female, house name included"
  • "wood elf ranger, name means something about autumn"
  • "high elf archmage, Tolkien-flavoured rather than D&D"
  • "surnames only, for a noble family"

Will these fit Dungeons & Dragons?

Yes — the conventions here are the ones D&D popularised, so results slot into a Forgotten Realms or homebrew campaign without adjustment. Drow and other dark-elf naming leans harder on consonants and tends to come with a house name; ask for that in the context box and you'll get it.

Can I use an elf name in my published novel or game?

Short invented names generally aren't protected by copyright, so a name the generator produces is yours to use. Two cautions: the model has read the fantasy canon, so it can hand you a name that already belongs to a well-known character — search before you commit — and names strongly associated with a specific franchise carry trademark risk even when copyright doesn't apply.

Are the meanings real Elvish?

No, and nothing claims they are. Tolkien's Sindarin and Quenya are constructed languages with actual grammars; the meanings here are evocative glosses, not translations. If you need genuine Sindarin, use a dedicated Elvish dictionary — a generated name that "means starlight" means it only in your setting.

Why do I sometimes get fewer names than I asked for?

Elf names cluster: ask for twenty and the model will offer you Aelar and Aelara. Near-identical duplicates are removed before you see them, and only the names you actually receive count against your credits.
