Guides
Drow names are a whole social system in miniature. A name like Zaknafein Do'Urden tells you the character's sex, their noble house and — to anyone who knows the Underdark — roughly where they stand in it. This generator builds Drow names on those D&D conventions, complete with house affiliation and the spider-and-shadow motifs of drow culture, and explains the meaning and standing behind each one.
It's tuned for D&D characters bound for the Underdark and the Forgotten Realms — priestesses of Lolth, house warriors, exiled renegades and the nobles who rule Menzoberranzan.
How to use it
Length sets how much of the social picture you get. A short personal name (Rizzen, Vierna, Drisz) is the everyday form; a longer name pairs it with a house name (Malice Baenre) — the full statement of rank a noble drow makes on entering a room.
Complexity controls how exotic the phonetics run. Balanced keeps names sayable at the table; elaborate brings the apostrophes and denser clusters that make a name look properly Underdark on the page.
Use extra context to fix sex, house and role:
- "female priestess of Lolth, high noble house"
- "male drow warrior, common soldier, harsh sound"
- "renegade drow who abandoned their house, like Drizzt"
- "name with a spider or web motif"
Are these authentic D&D Drow names?
Yes — the generator follows the conventions the Forgotten Realms established, including the gendered suffixes (male names leaning on -ar, -in, -us and -rin; female on -tra, -ana, -ara and -eth) and the personal-name-plus-house structure. Name the character's sex and station in the context box and the results will read correctly to anyone who knows the setting.
Can I get a matriarchal house name too?
Yes — drow society is matriarchal, and the great houses are its power structure. Choose a longer length or ask for a house name in the context box and you'll get the paired form, so a priestess arrives with a house like Baenre or Melarn attached rather than a bare given name.
Can I use a generated Drow name in my published work?
Generally yes — short invented names aren't protected by copyright. Search before committing, though: the Drow canon is small and famous, so the model can hand back something close to a well-known character (Drizzt, Jarlaxle, the Baenre matriarchs), and names tied to the Forgotten Realms carry trademark risk even when copyright doesn't apply.
