Kenku don't have names the way other races do. Cursed to speak only in sounds they've stolen, the crow-folk of Dungeons & Dragons are named by the noises they carry — the scrape of a drawn blade, the clink of a dropped coin, the creak of an old door. A kenku called Sword-Scrape earned it by repeating that sound until it stuck. This generator leans all the way into that conceit, producing onomatopoeic, borrowed-sound names and a line explaining the noise behind each one.

That makes kenku names unlike anything else in this family: no melodic vowels, no noble titles, just sharp little fragments of overheard sound.

How to use it

The length control tracks how compound the name is. Short names (Whistle, Clatter, Squeak) are a single stolen sound. Longer ones (Rusty-Hinge-Creak, Two-Coins-Falling) stack sounds into a phrase — good for an older kenku with more noises in its repertoire, or for comic effect.

Complexity decides how literal the sound is. Simple gives you plain, recognisable noises (Snap, Thud, Chirp); elaborate builds evocative multi-part sound-images that read almost like tiny poems.

Use extra context to point the mimicry at your kenku's history:

  • "kenku thief, names taken from city sounds — locks, coins, footsteps"
  • "kenku raised near a blacksmith, metal and fire noises"
  • "sinister kenku assassin, sounds are quiet and unsettling"
  • "comic-relief kenku, absurd household noises"

Does this match how kenku work in D&D 5e?

Yes — the sound-mimicry naming is straight from the kenku lore in the Monster Manual and Volo's Guide to Monsters. A name like "Bowstring-Twang" reads correctly to any 5e player without explanation, and fits a kenku PC, NPC or the whole flock.

Why are the names sounds instead of words?

Because that's the curse. Kenku can perfectly reproduce sounds they've heard but can't invent speech of their own, so their "name" is whichever sound they've chosen to represent themselves. The generator writes each name as the sound it imitates, which is what makes them instantly recognisable as kenku.

Can I use a generated kenku name in my own game?

Yes — these are short descriptive sound-phrases, not protected content, so use them freely. Because they're built from everyday noises they rarely collide with anything trademarked, but a quick search never hurts if you're publishing.

Why do repeated runs reuse the same sounds?

There are only so many sharp, evocative noises, so large batches cluster around blades, coins and doors. Near-duplicates are filtered before you see them, and pressing Generate again nudges the model toward sounds it hasn't used yet.
