Guias

Tabaxi don't have names so much as descriptions. In Dungeons & Dragons the cat-folk name themselves for a moment, a trait or a story — "Whisper of the Wind," "Seven Stars at Dusk" — so the name is a tiny piece of characterisation. This generator builds those descriptive phrases and explains the meaning behind each, so the name arrives with a hook already attached.

It follows the convention the D&D sourcebooks set out: short evocative phrases, usually two to four words, drawing on feline instincts, natural imagery and emotional states, and reflecting a Tabaxi's famously curious and restless nature.

How to use it

Length maps directly onto how many words the phrase runs to. Short results give you the two-word core (Quick Paw, Distant Rain); longer ones spin out the full poetic version (She Who Chases the Setting Sun) plus the shortened everyday form a party would actually call them.

Complexity decides how figurative the phrase gets. Simple stays concrete and literal (Bright Claw). Elaborate reaches for metaphor and layered imagery — beautiful, but worth keeping to a length your table can say aloud each session.

Use extra context to tie the name to your character's story:

  • "curious wanderer, name references a river crossing"
  • "veteran hunter, name earned after a great battle"
  • "shy scholar, imagery about stars and reading"
  • "give me the full clan name and the short nickname"

Is this accurate to how Tabaxi are named in D&D?

Yes — the descriptive-phrase convention, the feline and natural imagery, and the idea that a name records a personal story all come straight from the official lore. Tabaxi typically also use a shortened form of their name in everyday speech; ask for it and the generator will hand you both the full phrase and the nickname.

What makes a good Tabaxi name?

A phrase that tells a story in three or four words. The strongest results imply an event or a trait you can build a backstory around — a name like "Caught the Falling Leaf" already suggests patience, reflexes and a memory the character carries. The description makes that implied story explicit.

Can I use these names for my character or campaign?

Yes. Descriptive phrases like these aren't protected by copyright, so a generated Tabaxi name is yours to use at the table or in fiction. Tabaxi themselves are Wizards of the Coast's creation, so if you're publishing commercially rather than playing, check the current Open Game License terms — but the individual names are free for your own character.
