Why correct sodium?
High blood glucose draws water out of cells, diluting serum sodium. A patient with severe hyperglycemia can show a low measured sodium even though their sodium once glucose normalizes would be normal or high. The corrected value estimates what sodium would be at a glucose of 100 mg/dL.
Formula
Corrected Na = measured Na + factor × (glucose − 100) ÷ 100 (glucose in mg/dL)
- 1.6 — Katz (1973), the traditional factor.
- 2.4 — Hillier (1999), better supported at glucose above ~400 mg/dL.
Glucose in mmol/L is converted by multiplying by 18.016.
Notes
The correction only applies to hyperglycemia; below 100 mg/dL no correction is made. This tool is educational and not a substitute for clinical judgment. Everything runs in your browser.
