What is the geometric mean?
The geometric mean of n non-negative numbers is the n-th root of their product. It is the right average for quantities that multiply — growth rates, investment returns, ratios and index numbers — because it is not dominated by large outliers the way the arithmetic mean is.
How this tool works
- Paste your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
- Pick how many decimal places you want.
- Read the geometric mean and a comparison table with the arithmetic mean, harmonic mean, median, minimum and maximum.
Internally the mean is computed through logarithms, so long lists of large or tiny values don't overflow. If any value is zero, the geometric mean is 0. Negative numbers are rejected.
Example
For 1, 3 and 9 the product is 27 and the cube root is 3, while the arithmetic mean is 4.33 — for positive data the geometric mean never exceeds the arithmetic mean (AM–GM inequality).
Averaging growth rates
To average percentage growth, convert each rate to a factor (+10% → 1.10, −5% → 0.95), take the geometric mean, then subtract 1.
