How batting average is calculated

Batting average (AVG) is hits divided by at bats:

AVG = Hits ÷ At Bats

It's conventionally written to three decimal places with no leading zero, and spoken as if it were a three-digit number. A player with 45 hits in 150 at bats is batting .300 — "three hundred".

How to use it

Enter the number of hits and the number of at bats. The average updates as you type.

What counts as an at bat?

This is where most batting-average confusion lives. An at bat is not the same as a plate appearance. A plate appearance becomes an at bat unless the batter:

  • draws a walk (base on balls),
  • is hit by a pitch,
  • hits a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly,
  • or reaches on catcher's interference.

So a player who walks four times and singles once in five trips to the plate went 1-for-1, batting 1.000 — not 1-for-5. Feed this calculator at bats, not plate appearances, or your average will read far lower than it should.

What's a good batting average?

In modern Major League Baseball, .300 is the traditional marker of an excellent hitter, .250 is roughly league average, and anything under .200 is unkindly known as the Mendoza Line. Averages run considerably higher in softball and in youth leagues.

Why AVG doesn't tell the whole story

Batting average treats a single and a grand slam identically, and ignores walks entirely. That's why on-base percentage (OBP) and slugging percentage (SLG) exist, and why analysts lean on OPS and wRC+ instead. AVG remains the most quoted hitting statistic in baseball — just not the most informative one.
