Instagram's feed forces every GIF into a 1:1 square, cropping or squashing anything wider or taller unless you fix the aspect ratio first. This tool does that fix for you — upload a GIF, pick Pad or Crop, and every frame is decoded, resized onto a square canvas, and re-encoded with its original delay intact. Your upload shows in its own Uploaded GIF preview as soon as you pick it, right above the Square GIF result, so you can compare the two once you run the tool.
How it works
Upload a GIF (animated or static) and choose how it should become square:
- Pad to square — keeps the whole frame and adds a solid-color border on the shorter side (top/bottom for a wide GIF, left/right for a tall one), split evenly on both edges. Pick the border color with the Background color picker; it defaults to white.
- Crop to square — fills the frame edge to edge by cutting the longer side down to match the shorter one, trimmed evenly off both edges. Nothing is added, but content near the cropped edges is lost.
A GIF that's already square passes through with no visible change either way.
Loop forever is checked by default, so the output GIF loops indefinitely like most animated GIFs. Uncheck it to make the output play once and stop on its last frame.
Privacy
The GIF is processed on our server, not in your browser — that's what makes multi-frame decoding and re-encoding possible without a heavy in-browser library. It's used only to produce your result and isn't stored afterward, and there's no account or sign-up needed. This uses one credit per run, including on the website itself.
Does this work on animated GIFs?
Yes — that's the whole point. Every frame is squared up individually and re-encoded with its original timing, so the animation plays exactly as before, just on a square canvas.
Which one should I pick, Pad or Crop?
Pad if nothing in the frame can be lost — a screenshot, a chart, a GIF with text near the edges. Crop if a bit of cropping is fine and you'd rather fill the whole square with no borders — a face or a centered subject usually crops cleanly.
Can I pick a background other than a solid color?
Not in this tool — Pad only fills with one flat color. For a padded GIF that needs a photo or gradient behind it, composite it in an image editor first, then run that result through here if it still needs an exact square (it likely already will).
Why is the output slightly different in file size or color from the original?
Every frame is fully re-encoded, so the file size always changes somewhat. Colors normally come out exactly as they were — Pad's border color is simply added to the palette. Only a GIF that was already using close to the maximum 256 colors per frame gets its colors lightly re-quantized, to keep the result within that format limit.
