Guides

A city name has to do something a character name doesn't: imply a place with a history. Ravenhold tells you who founded it. Sunspire tells you what you can see from ten miles away. Grymmarsh tells you not to go.

This generator produces city names for fantasy settings and gives each one a line of lore — the feature, founding or reputation the name points at — so you can tell which ones your map actually wants.

How to use it

Length maps closely onto register. Short names (Vex, Kar, Umbral) suit frontier towns and thieves' ports. Long, compound ones (Aetherium Vantaris, Thornwake Hollow) suit capitals, cathedral cities and anywhere with a ruling council.

Complexity controls how far the name drifts from recognisable English roots. Simple gives you names built from words you know — Ironford, Coldwater. Elaborate invents its own morphology.

The extra context box is where the setting goes:

  • "port cities on a frozen northern coast"
  • "built into the walls of a canyon, dwarven"
  • "ruined, overgrown, once elven"
  • "desert trade hub at an oasis, vaguely Persian"

Will these work for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign?

That's the main thing people use it for. Ask for a handful, keep the two or three that suggest a story, and let the one-line lore become the hook — a city described as "built atop the bones of the thing it worships" has just written your first session for you.

Can I use these names in a published game or novel?

Generally yes. Short invented place names aren't protected by copyright. Do check that a name you love isn't already a well-known location in an existing franchise: the model has read plenty of fantasy, and Neverwinter is not available.

Do the names come with maps or descriptions?

Each name comes with one sentence of lore, and that's the whole of it — enough to spark an idea, not enough to constrain your setting. Treat the description as a suggestion; nothing stops you keeping the name Thornwake and discarding everything the generator said about it.

Why are the results different every time?

The generator is deliberately random, so two runs give you two different lists. Nothing is saved between runs, so copy or download anything you want to keep before you press Generate again.
