AI Name Generator

Naming things is the part of a project that stalls everyone. This tool hands the blank page to a language model: describe roughly what you're naming, choose how ornate and how long the names should be, and get a list back with a short explanation of what each one evokes.

It works for characters in a story, towns on a map, a band, a startup, a Dungeons & Dragons rogue, or the branch you're about to push. If you already know the genre, the themed generators below will get you there faster.

How to use it

1. Pick a complexity. Simple gives you names that are easy to say and spell. Balanced keeps them pronounceable but characterful. Elaborate leans into unusual letter combinations and multi-part constructions.
2. Pick a name length — short (roughly 3–6 letters), medium (7–10), or long (11 or more, sometimes several words).
3. Optionally add extra context. This is the field that does the heavy lifting: "a grizzled dwarven blacksmith", "a minimalist Scandinavian furniture brand", "coastal towns in a rainy fantasy kingdom".
4. Leave Include a short description on to get a one-line note on each name's meaning or flavour, or turn it off for a plain list of names only.
5. Drag the slider to choose how many names you want, then press Generate.

With descriptions on, each name arrives with a one-line note of its meaning, origin or flavour, so you can tell a name you like from a name that merely sounds nice. Turn descriptions off and you get just the names — handy when you want a quick shortlist to copy.

What it costs

Priced per name — the Generate button shows the exact credit cost live as you move the slider, so you always know the price before you run it. Only the names you actually receive are billed: ask for ten and get eight, and you're charged for eight. Credits reset daily, and a run that fails costs nothing at all.

Does it generate the same names for everyone?

No. The model runs with high randomness, so two people asking for "five elf names" get two different lists, and so do you if you press Generate twice. That also means the tool can't guarantee a name is unused — always check trademark and domain availability before you commit to a brand name.

Can I use these names commercially?

Generated names aren't copyrightable on their own, and short names generally aren't protectable by copyright in any case. Trademark is the thing to watch: a name being available here says nothing about whether someone already trades under it. Search your local trademark register first.

Why did I get fewer names than I asked for?

Language models repeat themselves, especially when asked for many variations on one theme. Duplicates are removed before the results reach you, so a request for twenty names occasionally returns eighteen. Only the names you actually receive count against your credits.

Is my extra context sent anywhere?

Yes — the text you type is sent to the AI provider that generates the names, because it's part of the prompt. Don't paste anything confidential into it. Everything else about the tool (your settings, the results) stays between your browser and this site.

Which AI model is behind it?

Whichever one is serving the site at the time. The tool is provider-agnostic and fails over between backends, so a model outage doesn't take the generator down with it.
