Guides

Warforged names are a naming problem no other race has: your character was built, given a designation on an assembly line, and only later started deciding who they were. That tension — serial number becoming self — is what makes a good Warforged name interesting. This generator produces names that sit anywhere on that arc, from a purely functional label to a self-chosen name that still carries the mark of the forge, each with a line explaining what it says about the construct who bears it.

How to use it

Length tracks how far along the Warforged is in becoming a person. Short, blunt designations (Iron, Six, Bolt) read as freshly decanted or still thinking of themselves as equipment. Longer names (Sentinel-of-the-Last-War, Copperplate Vael) read as Warforged who have had time, a past, and reasons to name themselves.

Complexity decides how mechanical the phonetics feel. Simple leans on plain words — metals, numbers, functions. Elaborate fuses those with syllables borrowed from human, elf or dwarf naming, the way a self-aware Warforged might reach for a name that sounds like it belongs to a people.

Use extra context to lock in the concept:

  • "warrior Warforged, name from a number or rank"
  • "scout, chose an elf-flavoured name after the war"
  • "labourer construct, still uses its factory designation"
  • "envoy diplomat, blends a gear-word with a noble surname"

Do these fit Dungeons & Dragons and Eberron?

Yes — Warforged are an Eberron race, and the convention here (function-words, mechanical components, self-chosen names) matches how the setting presents them. A name generated for "scout who took a new name after the Last War" will read correctly to anyone at an Eberron table without further explanation.

What's the difference between a designation and a chosen name?

A designation is what the Warforged was assigned at creation — often a number, a function, or a component (Ninety-Eight, Hammer, Strut). A chosen name is one the Warforged adopts once self-aware, and it usually keeps a trace of the mechanical origin while reaching toward something more personal. Ask for either explicitly in the context box; by default you'll get a mix.

Can I use a generated Warforged name in my own game or story?

Generally yes — short invented names aren't protected by copyright. Do a quick search before committing, since names built from common words can collide with existing characters, and anything tied directly to published Eberron material carries trademark considerations even when copyright doesn't.

Why do I sometimes get fewer names than I asked for?

Warforged names cluster around the same small vocabulary of metals, numbers and functions, so big batches throw up near-duplicates. Those are filtered before you see them, and only the names you actually receive count against your credits.
