The Network Speed Unit Converter turns a single network or data-transfer speed into its equivalent across 14 units at once. Enter one value, choose the unit it is expressed in, and the tool instantly builds a table showing the same speed in bits per second, kilobits, megabits, gigabits, terabits per second, and their byte-rate counterparts — both decimal (KB/s, MB/s, GB/s, TB/s) and binary (KiB/s, MiB/s, GiB/s, TiB/s).

Internet plans, mobile data, and network hardware are almost always advertised in bits per second (Mbps, Gbps), while file sizes, downloads, and file transfer progress bars are shown in bytes per second (MB/s, GB/s). Since 1 byte equals 8 bits, a "100 Mbps" connection tops out around 12.5 MB/s — not 100 MB/s. This tool handles that conversion (and every other unit combination) instantly, so you never have to do the division by hand.

How to use it

Why is my 100 Mbps connection only downloading at 12.5 MB/s?

Because internet speeds are sold in bits per second but download managers and browsers report bytes per second. Divide the advertised Mbps figure by 8 to get the real-world MB/s ceiling: 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s. That's the theoretical maximum — actual throughput is usually a bit lower due to protocol overhead.

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

The case matters: lowercase b means bit, uppercase B means byte. Mbps (megabits per second) and MB/s (megabytes per second) differ by a factor of 8 — 1 MB/s equals 8 Mbps. Mixing them up is one of the most common sources of confusion when comparing internet plans to file transfer speeds.

What's the difference between KB/s and KiB/s?

KB/s uses the decimal definition (1 KB = 1,000 bytes), the convention networking and ISPs use. KiB/s uses the binary definition (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes), which some operating systems and file managers use when reporting transfer speeds. The two are close but not identical, and the gap widens at larger scales — 1 GB/s is about 0.93 GiB/s.

How many Mbps is Gigabit Ethernet?

Gigabit Ethernet runs at 1 Gbps, which is 1,000 Mbps, or about 125 MB/s of real-world byte throughput.
