A changeling's name is a slippery thing. These shapeshifters wear whatever face the moment calls for, and their names follow suit — soft, fluid and hard to pin to any one gender or people. Many keep a short private truename known only to a trusted few, worn under a rotating collection of ordinary borrowed identities. This generator produces both kinds, and adds a line of flavour so you can tell a mask from the face beneath it.

It's tuned for the D&D changeling race (best known from Eberron), but suits any shapeshifter, doppelganger or infiltrator who needs a name — or several — that never quite commits.

How to use it

Length picks which side of the changeling you're naming. Short names (Fen, Sel, Ryn) read as private truenames — single soft syllables a changeling rarely shares. Longer names (Marisel Vane, Corin Ashford) read as the full, plausible aliases they wear in public.

Complexity decides how invented the names feel. Simple gives you names that pass as ordinary in any town; elaborate leans into the faintly otherworldly, ambiguous quality that marks a changeling's true self.

Use extra context to steer the disguise:

  • "truename, single syllable, soft and androgynous"
  • "human alias for a merchant in a port city"
  • "spy identity that could be any gender"
  • "changeling rogue, name hints at something hidden"

Does this work for Dungeons & Dragons?

Yes — changelings are a playable D&D race (introduced in Eberron and reprinted since), and these names follow their established convention: mutable, ambiguous, and split between a private truename and public personas. Ask for a truename or an alias in the context box and you'll get the right register for either.

What's the difference between a truename and an alias?

A truename is the name a changeling is given at birth and guards closely — usually short and soft. Aliases are the ordinary, throwaway names they adopt to blend in, and a single changeling may cycle through dozens. Use the length control and the context box to get whichever your scene needs.

Can I use a generated changeling name in my own game or story?

Generally yes — short invented names aren't protected by copyright, so a name here is yours to use. The changeling race itself is published material, so keep your own writing transformative, and search a name before committing in case the model echoes an existing character.

Why do the names feel deliberately gender-neutral?

Because that ambiguity is the point — a changeling who can be anyone benefits from a name that doesn't lock them into one identity. If you want a name that leans clearly masculine or feminine for a specific persona, say so in the extra-context box and the generator will oblige.
