What is a bill of sale?
A bill of sale is a signed record that ownership of an item moved from a seller to a buyer. It names both parties, describes the item, states the price and date, and says whether the sale is as-is or backed by a warranty. Buyers use it to register a vehicle or prove ownership; sellers keep it as proof they no longer own — and are no longer liable for — the item.
How to use the generator
- Pick what you are selling (vehicle, motorcycle, boat, trailer, equipment, firearm or general property).
- Enter the seller and buyer names and addresses, then the item description and its VIN or serial number. For cars and motorcycles add the odometer reading.
- Enter the price, payment method, sale date and your state.
- Choose as-is or warranty terms, and tick the notary block if your state needs a notarized signature.
- Copy the text or download it as a
.txtfile, print it, and have both parties sign.
Everything is built in your browser. Names, addresses and VINs are never uploaded or stored.
Tips
- Download the result as plain text or as a print-ready PDF.
- Use the VIN, hull ID or serial number exactly as it appears on the title or item.
- Make two signed copies — one for each party.
- Many states require the title itself to be signed over as well; a bill of sale supports the transfer but may not replace it.
- Some states require notarization or odometer disclosure forms. Check your DMV.
FAQ
Is this bill of sale legally binding? A signed bill of sale is generally enforceable, but this is a general template and not legal advice. Requirements differ by state and item type.
Should I choose as-is or warranty? Private sales are usually as-is. Choose warranty if you want to promise clear title and the condition you described.
Do I need a notary? Not everywhere. Some states require one for vehicles or boats; the optional notary block is there for those cases.
