Complexity decides how far into distinctly French orthography the names go. Simple keeps to names an English speaker can read at a glance; elaborate brings in the accents, the -eau and -ault endings, and the less-anglicised spellings.

Are these authentic French names?
They're drawn from genuine French naming — real given names and surnames, with plausible meanings and origins — but the generator is an inspiration tool, not a genealogical record or a registry. Treat the meaning notes as a helpful gloss rather than an authoritative etymology; for a family-history or legal use, confirm a specific name against a proper reference. Occasionally the model may combine elements in a way that's plausible but not traditionally attested.
Can I use these names for a character or a real baby?
Yes to both — personal names aren't owned by anyone, so you're free to use one for a novel, a game character or a child. For a real baby, it's worth checking the pronunciation and any accented spelling with a French speaker, since French orthography carries information (and the occasional formality) that isn't obvious from the written form alone.
Do the names reflect different regions and eras?
They can — ask for it. French naming varies by region (Breton, Alsatian, Occitan flavours differ) and by period (a 1900s name lands differently from a 2020s one). Put the region or era in the context box and the results will lean that way; leave it open and you'll get a broad, mostly timeless mix.
Why do I sometimes get fewer names than I asked for?
