Guides

A last name carries more information than a first: it hints at where a family came from, what they once did, and sometimes who they descended from. Smith was a job. Johnson was a father. Hill was a place. This generator produces surnames across all those patterns and tells you which one you're looking at, so the name fits the character rather than just filling a slot.

Give it a heritage, a sound or a first name to pair with, and it comes back with a shortlist — each surname explained by origin and meaning.

How to use it

Length shifts the register. Short leans toward blunt, old English-style names (Ash, Vane, Crowe). Long gives you the multi-syllable, often continental surnames (Castellano, Ravensworth, Aleksandrov).

Complexity decides how far the spelling strays from what an English reader sounds out at a glance. Simple stays phonetic; elaborate brings in the accents, silent letters and consonant clusters of names that travelled.

Use extra context to aim it:

  • "Italian surnames, common but not cliché"
  • "goes with the first name Eleanor, English, slightly aristocratic"
  • "occupational surnames, medieval feel"
  • "Scandinavian, patronymic, for a fantasy novel"

Are these real surnames or invented ones?

A mix, and which you get depends on what you ask for. Request "common Irish surnames" and you'll mostly get real ones; ask for something distinctive or fantasy-flavoured and the generator will build plausible-sounding names that follow the pattern without necessarily existing. If you need a genuinely attested surname — for genealogy, say — verify it against a surname database, and treat the reported meaning as a strong guess rather than settled etymology, since the model can attach a tidy origin story to a name that never had one.

Can I use a generated surname for a character or pen name?

Yes. Surnames aren't protected by copyright, so a name the generator produces is yours to use for a character, a pseudonym or a game. The one caution is real people: a distinctive surname paired with a common first name can accidentally match a living person, so a quick search before you publish is worth the minute.

How do I get a surname that matches a first name I already have?

Put the first name in the context box and say what you're after — "surname for Priya, modern British Indian" or "pairs with Cormac, Irish." The generator will weight its choices toward names that sit naturally alongside it in rhythm and origin.
