Power ratings are quoted differently depending on the industry: electronics and appliances use watts and kilowatts, vehicle engines use horsepower (and, in Europe, metric horsepower), and HVAC equipment uses BTU per hour. This tool bridges all of them at once.

How many watts are in one horsepower?

One mechanical horsepower equals about 745.7 watts. This tool computes that conversion (and its inverse) instantly for any value.

What is the difference between horsepower and metric horsepower?

Mechanical (imperial) horsepower is defined as 550 foot-pounds per second (745.7 W), while metric horsepower (PS or CV, common in Europe) is defined as 75 kgf·m/s (735.5 W) — about 1.4% smaller. Car spec sheets from different regions can quote either, so always check which one is meant before comparing engines.

How does BTU per hour relate to watts?

One BTU per hour equals about 0.293 watts. Air conditioner and furnace capacities are often rated in BTU/h in the US, while the rest of the world typically uses kilowatts — a useful reference is that 12,000 BTU/h is roughly 1 "ton" of air conditioning capacity (about 3.5 kW).

Why is kilocalories per hour included?

Kilocalories per hour (kcal/h) is occasionally used for the power output of heaters and human metabolic rate discussions — it's the same "calorie" used on nutrition labels, applied as a rate rather than a total energy amount.
