The average adult reads silently at about 238 words per minute.

The average read-aloud/speaking speed is about 154 words per minute.

Output

Estimated silent reading time at the reading speed above.

Guides

Paste or upload any piece of writing and this calculator estimates how long it takes to get through it — both silently, at your own reading pace, and read aloud, at a slower speaking pace. It also reports the raw word count and character count, so you get everything you need for a byline estimate, a speech timing check, or a content-length audit in one place.

How the estimate works

The math is deliberately simple and transparent: time = word count ÷ words per minute. There's no adjustment for images, embedded code blocks, or other page elements — some blog-style calculators tack on a flat "12 seconds per image," but that's a convention from specific publishing platforms rather than a measure of reading itself, so this tool sticks to text. If you want an estimate that accounts for images, add their reading-time contribution manually.

Two speeds are calculated side by side:

  • Reading time — silent reading speed, defaulting to 238 words per minute, the commonly cited average for adult silent reading. Drag the slider anywhere from 100 to 800 WPM to match a slow, careful reader or a fast skimmer.
  • Speaking time — read-aloud speed, defaulting to 154 words per minute, since pronouncing every syllable clearly for a listener is inherently slower than reading silently. Adjustable from 50 to 400 WPM — useful for timing a speech, a podcast script, or a voiceover recording.

Both speeds are independent sliders, so you can leave reading time at the default while dialing in a custom speaking pace (or vice versa) to match your own measured rate.

Who is it for?

  • Writers and editors adding a "X min read" badge to an article or blog post.
  • Speakers and podcasters timing how long a script will take to read aloud, to fit a slot length.
  • Students and content teams estimating study time or content-consumption time for a document.
  • Teachers gauging how long a reading assignment will realistically take a class.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text into the box, or drop a .txt file onto the uploader — the field fills in automatically.
  2. Adjust the Reading Speed and Speaking Speed sliders to match your own pace, or a specific audience's.
  3. Read the results instantly: reading time, speaking time, word count and character count all update as you type.

Why are reading time and speaking time so different?

Reading time reflects how fast most people silently process written text — the eyes can jump ahead and the brain recognizes whole words and phrases at once. Speaking time is capped by the mechanics of pronunciation: every syllable has to actually be voiced, which is why the default speaking speed (154 WPM) is noticeably slower than the default reading speed (238 WPM).

Privacy

All counting and timing happens entirely in your browser — nothing you type or upload is sent anywhere.
