The old lighthouse had guided ships safely past the rocky coastline for over a century, its beam sweeping across the dark water every few seconds. Local fishermen still spoke of storms it had helped them survive, and although its keeper was long gone, volunteers kept the light burning as a tribute to the town's maritime history.

Guides

Type a short passage against the clock and get an instant read on your typing speed: words per minute (WPM), accuracy, and a count of the characters you got wrong. Everything runs in your browser — no text you type is ever sent anywhere — and your personal best WPM is remembered on this device so you can track your progress over repeated attempts.

How to use it

Pick a duration (15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds) and a difficulty (Easy, Medium or Hard — this only changes the vocabulary and sentence complexity of the sample text, not its length), then start typing into the box below the passage. The clock doesn't start until your very first keystroke, so you can take as long as you like to read the passage first without it costing you any time.

As you type, each character is checked against the passage in real time: correctly typed characters turn green, mistakes are flagged in red with an underline, and the character you're currently on is highlighted. Pasting is disabled — the test only measures characters you actually typed.

The test ends the moment either the timer runs out or you finish typing the whole passage, whichever comes first. Your final WPM, accuracy and error count are shown immediately, along with whether you beat your saved best.

How WPM is calculated

This tool uses the industry-standard typing test convention: 1 "word" equals 5 characters (including spaces and punctuation), regardless of the actual length of the words you typed. This keeps the metric consistent across passages, since "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and "a" shouldn't count as the same "word" just because you typed one of each.

The formula is:

WPM = (correct characters typed / 5) / minutes elapsed

Only correctly typed characters count toward your WPM — a passage typed quickly but full of mistakes will score lower than one typed a little slower but accurately. Accuracy is simply the percentage of all characters you typed that were correct (correct / total typed), and the error count is the number of characters that didn't match the passage at that position.

Privacy

The passage, everything you type, and your best-score history never leave your browser. Your best WPM is stored locally using your browser's localStorage, scoped to this tool only — clearing your browser data will reset it.
