How to use it
- Upload the PDF you want to redact. Every page renders in the editor above.
- On each page, drag a box over anything you want removed — a name, an account number, a whole paragraph. Draw as many boxes as you need; use the Previous/Next buttons to move between pages.
- Made a mistake? Click the × on a box to remove it, or Clear this page to start that page over.
- Press Apply redactions. The redacted file downloads automatically as
redacted.pdf.
Why this is different from just drawing a black box
Most free "redact a PDF" tools just draw a black rectangle on top of the page — the text underneath is still there in the file, and can be recovered with a simple copy-paste or a "select all" in a PDF reader. This is a real, repeated failure in actual redacted documents (government releases, court filings) where the "blacked-out" text turned out to be fully extractable.
This tool avoids that: any page you draw a box on is flattened into a plain image, with the box burned directly into the pixels, before it's written back into the PDF. There's no text layer left to recover — the redacted content is genuinely gone from the file. Pages you don't touch are left exactly as they were, so the rest of the document keeps its original, selectable text.
Does this affect the whole document?
No — only the pages you actually draw a box on are converted to an image. Every other page keeps its original text and quality untouched.
Will this work on a password-protected PDF?
A PDF with an owner lock but no open password usually redacts fine. A file that requires a password just to open must be unlocked first — use the Unlock PDF tool, then redact the result.
I just want to cover something visually, not remove it for good
