使用指南

The Baking Pan Size Converter works out how to scale a recipe when you don't have the pan it was written for. Pick the original pan and the pan you actually own — from a preset list or by entering custom dimensions — and it computes a volume-based scale factor, applies it directly to a pasted ingredient list, and flags whether the new pan needs a different bake time or oven temperature.

How to use it

  1. Set the original pan — the shape and size the recipe was written for. Choose a preset (round, square, rectangular, bundt/tube, loaf, springform, sheet pan, muffin tin) or "Custom size…" to enter exact dimensions.
  2. Set the target pan the same way — the one you're actually baking in.
  3. Read the scale factor and pan volumes in the result. A factor above 1 means the target pan is bigger (you need more batter); below 1 means it's smaller.
  4. Optionally paste the recipe's ingredient list, one item per line (e.g. 2 cups flour), and the same ratio is applied to every quantity — rounded to common cooking fractions or plain decimals, your choice.
  5. Check the fill & bake note: it compares the two pans' depth and tells you whether to raise or lower the oven temperature and adjust the bake time, since a shallower or deeper pan bakes differently even at the same batter volume.

Why volume, not just a size lookup?

Pan capacity is what actually limits (or under-fills) a recipe — a shallow, wide pan and a narrow, deep one can share a diameter but hold very different amounts of batter. This tool computes volume from each pan's real geometry — a circle for round pans, a rectangle for square/rectangular/loaf/sheet pans, and a ring (outer circle minus the center tube) for bundt pans — rather than a fixed lookup table, so a custom pan gets the exact same math as a preset one.

How accurate is the "cups" figure?

It's the pan's geometric capacity to the rim, calculated from its dimensions — useful for comparing pans and computing a scale factor, but a bundt or muffin pan is normally filled well short of the rim to leave room for rising, so don't treat it as "how much batter to pour in." The scale factor is the number that matters for scaling a recipe; the cup figures are there to sanity-check that the two pans are in the same ballpark.

Why does the target pan's depth matter if the volume already matches?

Two pans can hold the same total volume while being very different shapes — a shallow sheet pan versus a deep loaf pan, for example. Batter in a shallow pan spreads out and bakes faster at a slightly hotter oven; batter in a deep pan takes longer to cook through and browns on top before the center sets. Scaling the ingredients gets the quantity right; the fill & bake note is there for the part a volume ratio alone can't tell you.

Is my data private?

Yes. Every calculation, including the ingredient scaling, runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server.

Common uses

Turning a round layer cake into a sheet cake (or the reverse), fitting a bundt recipe into a loaf pan, doubling a recipe into a bigger rectangular pan for a crowd, or checking whether a springform pan you own is a safe substitute for the round pan a recipe calls for.
