AVI to MKV
Convert an AVI video to MKV — choose the quality, preview the result and download. Runs entirely in your browser; the video is never uploaded.
Input
Higher bitrate = sharper picture, bigger file. The video is re-encoded in real time, so conversion takes as long as the clip.
MKV video
Upload a AVI video, pick a quality and press Convert to MKV. Everything runs in your browser — the file is never uploaded.

What AVI to MKV does
Turn an AVI — a camcorder clip, a downloaded video, a screen capture — into a Matroska (MKV) file for media players, home servers and editors. The conversion runs in your browser, so the video is never uploaded.
How to use it
- Upload an AVI file.
- Pick a video quality (bitrate).
- Click Convert to MKV, preview the result, then download it.
Good to know
Your browser plays the video and re-records it, so conversion takes about as long as the clip itself — keep the tab open. Your browser has to be able to play the file: many AVI files use codecs (DivX, Xvid, MJPEG) that browsers can't decode, in which case you'll see an error rather than a broken file. Browsers that can't record Matroska directly write a WebM stream (a Matroska profile) and save it with the .mkv extension, which MKV players open normally. Re-encoding is lossy; raise the quality for detailed footage.
Privacy
Playback and encoding happen on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
